Primate Encounters

Nyungwe is best known for its extraordinary primate diversity, home to 13 different primate species, including the chimpanzee and the rare Ruwenzori colobus monkey. Chimpanzee trekking is one of the park’s most sought-after activities, providing visitors with an exciting opportunity to observe these intelligent primates in their natural habitat. The treks, led by expert guides, take you deep into the forest, where you’ll hear the calls of the chimpanzees echoing through the canopy before catching sight of them swinging through the trees or foraging on the forest floor. For those interested in exploring more of Nyungwe’s primate life, the park also offers Ruwenzori colobus monkey tracking, where groups of up to 300 monkeys can be seen leaping through the treetops in spectacular displays.

The Canopy Walk

One of Nyungwe’s unique attractions is the Canopy Walk, a thrilling adventure that takes you 50 meters above the forest floor. Spanning across a 160-meter-long suspension bridge, this walk provides a breathtaking aerial view of the forest’s lush canopy and offers an incredible perspective of Nyungwe’s vast biodiversity. As you traverse the bridge, you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and sometimes even primates moving through the treetops. The canopy walk is particularly popular with birdwatchers, as Nyungwe is home to over 300 bird species, including the great blue turaco, Rwenzori turaco, and the elusive Albertine owlet. This adventure offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the forest’s life from above, making it a highlight for many visitors.
